Life After Divorce
Nearly everything is different after divorce, especially if children are involved. There is no spouse to consult if you want to make a major purchase — and also no spouse to help pay for it. When the children are with you, there is no other parent to "give in" to their requests if you say "no" — and also no parent to make them dinner if you're not feeling well.
As with much of life, there are advantages and disadvantages to any new situation.
Giustino Capodilupo is an experienced family law attorney with legal and life experience. That experience helps us to manage expectations and provide realistic estimations of potential outcomes. One estimation that is nearly universal is that your lifestyle will most likely change after divorce. How it changes is largely in your hands.
Can You Maintain Your Lifestyle After Divorce?
One aspect of lifestyle that typically changes for both parties after divorce is their personal time. For the spouse with child custody, there may be less personal time and the reverse will be true for the non-custodial spouse.
At our law firm, we have seen that life after divorce typically includes a change in the financial situation. Even though one spouse may be paying alimony and child support, both spouses may need to make some adjustments. Consider the following lifestyle scenarios:
- Marital joint income of $80,000. Instead of making one mortgage payment, the joint income now must include double payments for housing and utilities. Perhaps a non-working spouse will need to find part-time or full-time employment and retirement will be delayed.
- Marital joint income of $160,000. As in the above scenario, the joint income is now paying for two households instead of one. If the couple was spending everything they made while married, they will need to either increase income or decrease spending after divorce.
- Marital joint income of $1.5 million. This couple may not need to make any lifestyle adjustments that are noticeable, but may still need to make some. Perhaps the most noticeable change will be the amount of time each spends with the children.
